Easy Tips: Refreshing Your Home

Refreshing Your Home

This is that time of year when we all get the bug to clean up and clean out! We’re all likely to clean out our closets and cabinets, but what if we did the same with our furniture, pillows, accessories, etc!? It’s a perfect time to refresh- even a new painting or lamp… or that bedskirt you’ve put off buying for entirely too long. (talking to myself here!)

Read on for some tips on how to make the most of a spring refresh!

tip no. I: Tackle shelves

Yall, I love some shelves- but they can be the most visually messy part of a space when not done correctly! When styling shelves, editing is the MOST important thing to remember. I love for mine to double duty as functional and beautiful. Look for baskets, boxes, and bins to really amp up your storage- and bonus points for ones that add pattern, texture, and color. When refreshing your shelves, consider a fun color (even if it’s just for the backs). When editing, ask yourself “do I need these tchotchkes?” and donate anything you don’t love! Grouping like objects is a good way to bring order to what would otherwise look like “a bunch of stuff.”

tip no. II- Kitchen

I think a huge part of restoring visual order to the messiest and busiest room in the house is making sure everything has a place. I love a clean countertop and try to only leave out the things I use the most often- a knife block, crock of spoons and spatulas, some snack containers for the girls, and a fruit bowl. This list looks different for every single family- start by asking yourself what you use the most and what hasn’t been touched. My general rule is that if something hasn’t been used in a year- it needs to go (looking at you, popsicle maker and mini cupcake maker!)

tip no. III: Toss the tired

This is my favorite! Every year or so, it’s a good idea to take a hard look at soft goods (pillows, throws, bedding, and rugs) and remove/replace anything that looks particularly tired. We have all fallen victim to frugal finds at Homegoods or Target- and while they look great for awhile- they just don’t last. (Flat pillows, picked throws, etc.) The same can be said for hand-me-downs that we hold on to a little too long. I see so many people that hold on to their grandmother’s worn out rug (that they don’t love)… don’t do this! Nothing is more frustrating than forcing something to work when it just doesn’t! A fresh pair of pillows or a new lamp can do wonders to refresh a tired room!

a few of my favorite things:

For those of us that still love to dive into a big stack of magazines and catalogs! Hit up Target for this beaut!

Glass Pitcher

These are my favorites! I have 2- one for drinks and one for a collection of spoons and spatulas beside our range. I also use these for flowers- talk about versatility! Find this at Williams Sonoma!

Tabletop Easel

This cutie is great for bookshelves, a sideboard, etc. to display artwork… and it’s on Overstock!

Countertop Food Storage

Love these! We keep 3 on our kitchen countertop with goldfish, cheerios, and nuts for quick snacks for the girls! These are from IKEA, but these can be found anywhere from Target to Walmart.

Colorful Throw

A great way to give new life to a stale space is to add some color- and a throw is a no-fail trick! This olive green throw from Ballard Designs is so classic- green goes with everything! It’s on sale right now, too!

Happy purging and tossing, yall!

xoxo,
